Let's talk about the International Thespian Honor Society:
If you're around the department, you've probably heard thespians talking about hours, points, leadership, and thespian membership. Here's how the system works...
When you work on a show (on or offstage - as an actor or technician building sets, hanging lights, or sewing costumes), you put in a lot of of hours. These hours turn into points (10 hours equals 1 point). Those points add up throughout your time in the theatre department. If you get 10 points (at least 2 of those points MUST come from crew - that's about 20 hours), you have earned membership into the Theatre National Honor Society - named the International Thespian Society, named after the first actor, Thespus.
In short, each time you show up, you get time added...
10 hours (approx) = 1 point
100 hours (approx) = 10 points
10 points (with at least 2 points in crew areas) = Theatre Honor Society Membership Achieved!
Theatre Honor Society = International Thespian Honor Society!
Being an honor society member is like having an "all access pass" to all things theatre ranging from field trips to see shows throughout the city to overnight field trips to the Illinois Theatre Festival and places like New York, Canada, or London! Additionally, Thespian Members benefit from professional workshops, guest speakers/artist panels, and mentorship from working Actors, Costumers, and Designers.
Points are awarded 6 times this year! That means you have 6 shows throughout the year to earn hours, points, and progress towards membership and awards!
Every time you are cast as an actor, you earn points. Every time you spend an hour after school building, painting, sewing, programming, hanging, re-weighting...you get the picture...you are earning points. At the close of each show hours are added up, converted to points, and awarded to those involved. At the close of the final show of the academic year, points are added up and converted to membership and special awards to be celebrated at out end-of-the-year Thespian Banquet in May.
You can check the status of your points HERE or on the link above. Please remember they are updated after the close of each show.
